Kawartha Ecological Growers
Kawartha Ecological Growers is a non-profit, sustainable farming collective in the western Kawartha Lakes. We operate with two mandates; 1) to be a support network for sustainable agriculture in the western Kawartha Lakes area, and 2) to increase access to good, clean, fair food in urban areas.
KEG is made up of nearly 20 small scale, family run farms between Woodville, Omemee, Kirkfield and Janetville. Together we produce a wide variety of sustainably- and ethically-grown fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, eggs and meats, as well as maple syrup, honey, pickles and preserves. As well, we have number of interesting relationships with a good number of chefs in Toronto, producing some great value-added products for the KEG group.
KEG manages a year round CSA program with 300+ members in the summer/fall, and 150 members in the winter/spring. We provide good, clean fair food to fine-dining restaurants and food-conscious individuals in the Kawartha Lakes and the GTA. We’re currently looking for 2 or 3 interns for the 2011 season who are interested in working on a variety of different farms, doing a variety of different tasks, learning the ins and outs of running a large CSA, as well as the nuances of servicing fine dining restaurants. We looking for some folks who are hard-working, self-motivated, capable, eager to learn and willing to try new things.
Our internships are flexible and can be built around the individual – with all the different aspects of KEG, we’ll work with you to create an internship that meets your needs, and give you the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to both run a farm and effectively market your goods. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn the administrative side of running a CSA and a farmer collective, giving you the experience and skill set needed to be successful in starting your own sustainable farm business.
