Wheelbarrow Farm

back

Wheelbarrow Farm is located an hour north-east of Toronto on 10 acres of rolling field and forest. We grow 5 acres of mixed organic vegetables and raise heritage breeds of pigs on pasture. Our mission is to build an environmentally sustainable farm that participates in building a more just and equitable local economy. Join myself and other young farmers (there will be 5 of us in 2011) for a fun and educational growing season. Accommodations are 2 trailers, a yurt, and private rooms in a house according to your tastes.

Here are some of the things you’ll learn about: orchards/vineyards, aquaponics, permaculture, bees, pigs, greenhouses, mixed vegetables (40 varieties), building projects, farmers’ market.

We are offering two types of positions in 2011:

1) Shared position with Willo’ Wind Farm. (Two Positions). Apprentices split their time between the two farms. This is the third year we will be sharing apprentices between the two farms. This gives you the opportunity to increase your learning experience by working on two different farms. Expectations: 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. 1 week holiday. $250/month. Food and accommodation

2) Full-time (2 positions). Some growing experience required. Full-time apprentices take on a greater planning role in the fields and in maintaining the farm store. You also have access to land to grow your own vegetables for sale at the on-farm store. Expectations: 5.5 days a week. 8 hours a day. 1 week holiday. $500/month. Food and accommodation. Full-time apprentices will also get the opportunity to spend 2 weeks during the growing season on Willo’ Wind farm.

Fun stuff: We are close to lakes, trails, and Toronto. Stained glass studio. Jam space for musicians. Scientific microscope. Vegetable baseball.

Positions start in April/May and end October 31st.
