Location: 20 minutes NW of Wakefield, Quebec
Start date: full internship (beginning of May 2010 — mid-Oct 2010)

Juniper Farm is a small certified organic vegetable farm owned by us, Alex Mackay-Smith and Juniper Turgeon. We offer 75 summer and fall CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares to our local community as well as attend the Wakefield and Old Chelsea Farmers’ Markets each week from June to Oct.

We grow over 60 varieties of fruits and veggies and have 3 acres of vegetables and 6 acres in rotation on our 18-acre piece of land. We have three greenhouses and a cold cellar to help extend our seasons. We eat almost entirely from the food that we grow and preserve on our farm.

What we offer:

We are offering opportunities for individuals to live and work with us on our organic vegetable farm. We have been apprenticing on farms in the past and have finally settled down on our own land. We are in our fifth year of growing on this land and are excited with the results. By interning with us, you will learn different aspects and details of organic farming and greenhouse management. We will also teach you how to eat locally all season long through canning, dehydrating, freezing and fermenting your season’s harvest. We have formed a network with other young organic farmers in West Quebec and the Ottawa Valley where we visit each other’s farms each month. You will have the opportunity to meet with other interns and farmers to expand your vision of the many ways you can farm. We are farmers that welcome the energy, curiosity and ingenuity of others on our farm.

We have two very large bell tents (the soul pad 5000-ease http://soulpad.co.uk/sanctuary/) that are set up on platforms as well as a small trailer for accommodation. For all of the interns there is a shared cabin common space with a wood stove, phone, library, place for eating, shared outdoor kitchen and outdoor shower (with hot water). There is a composting outdoor toilet.

There are two swimming spots, both within biking distance to the farm, which offers a refreshing treat on those hot summer days.

We prepare and eat lunch together 3 days a week with whoever is working on the farm, which can be 4 – 10 people. Breakfast and dinner are up to you – the garden is yours for the picking and the eggs are always in plenty. Bread and other whole food cooking essentials are also provided but all other food items will be your responsibility.

Each week we make time to have a community potluck dinner where we all gather to discuss upcoming events, news, living and working issues.

We expect interns to work 8 hours/day and 5.5 days/week.
We offer a stipend of $50/week and room & board.

We are close to Wakefield, a small town in the summer with lots of good music, restaurants and patios as well as a thriving arts community. There are also lots of amazing
trails and other outdoor activities in the Gatineau Park and we are 1 hour from Ottawa. Not that you will have much time for that anyway ;-) .

Who we would like to find:

* Individuals with a strong sense of commitment
* Individuals who believe in small-scale organic agriculture and are up for the everyday challenges that it presents.
* Individuals who enjoy living and working in a community
