Mariposa Farm
Mariposa Farm was established in 1980. Having graduated from Agricultural
school, I purchased the then abandoned 107 acre farm. From there I built all the
buildings- barn, workshop, house, and pavilion/restaurant. The farm has several
kilometers of trails that are used to access the forest firewood and timber. In the
year 2000, we purchased 70 adjacent acres to expand the farm.
We practice sustainable agriculture folding in various organic and ecological
techniques. Our farm has been free of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers)
for over 30 years. We raise ducks, geese,
cows (beef and diary), have a small maple syrup production,
and grow vegetables on 2 acres of gardens and in a large greenhouse.
A major project for this year is fencing the farm property.
We do not have a tractor, but we do get some custom work
done by a local farmer (i.e. hay).
Our main market is the restaurant market in Ottawa
We are looking for one stipend person (100$ per week) including room and
board, all meals with the family. Your hours are from 8 to 5, five days a week,
with the exception of a few weeks where you will work 7 days a week. The option
of living in a cabin (20 min walk from the farmstead) is possible; there you can
have your own garden. We give priority to interns willing to stay a full year. As a
matter of fact, you will receive a 500$ bonus if you stay a full year.
You will learn how Mariposa Farm works, including our on-farm restaurant, our
regional meat distribution business to over 100 Ottawa restaurants, above and
beyond how we practice sustainable agriculture.
We speak both French and English on our farm.
