CSA Intern Needed
Bunching Onions Community Supported Agriculture at Tucker House in Rockland is looking for an intern/part time employee this summer. We cultivate three vegetable gardens and a raspberry patch on the property of Tucker House Renewal Centre. We are not certified but we have been practicing organic gardening since the gardens were established in 1999.

As intern, you will be involved in all the aspects of the gardens, from greenhouse sowing, to transplanting, to direct sowing, weeding, composting, staking, harvesting, preparing the vegetables for the customers, fall cleaning of the gardens, etc.  Our season starts in May and runs until mid October.  A stipend of $75/ week is available for a minimum commitment of 2 days/ week (no weekends). Compensation of an additional $25 is available for any delivery that you may do. The intern must have transportation to at least Place D’Orleans.

Those interested in sustainable agriculture or those considering a future in managing a CSA/ market garden are encouraged to apply. The position requires significant amounts of physical labour. Gardening experience and knowledge is a definite asset. We are flexible for the right person.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary of role:
The Organic Garden Intern will work under the guidance of and be accountable to the Head Organic Gardener of Tucker House Renewal Centre to assist with the Bunching Onions Community Supported Agriculture (BOCSA) program.

Responsibilities:

  • Be committed to the development of a more sustainable society in accordance with the Mission Statement.
  • Model and enforce the smoke free policy for the Tucker House facility.
  • Assist with planning and promotion of the 2009 BOCSA program for 35 shares.
  • Attend community workshops to promote and support the CSA
  • Be on site at least 2 days per week to assist in the gardens including preparing beds, planting, mulching, composting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, and preparing and packaging vegetables for the CSA.
  • Coordinate the delivery of shares to Ottawa drop-off points on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Assist with maintaining records for the 2009 season including records of what is planted and harvested, weight of all vegetables harvested for personal, TH or CSA use
  • Close down beds at the end of the season and clean-up garden area and barn.
  • Assist with programs that involve visits and tours of the organic gardens.
