Desert Lake Gardens
Desert Lake Gardens
Two positions available.
Desert Lake Gardens is a small mixed farm with a special interest in shiitake mushroom growing. The farm is located in a largely forested area; many of the trees are red oak which is a preferred species for shiitake farming. We currently have 1000 shiitake bed logs in production. As well, we grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables with particular concentration on salad greens and herbs. Free range chickens and pigs have recently been added to the mix.
We are a ‘field to fork’ operation and have received a ‘premieres award for innovation’ based on this concept. Some of the food grown on the farm is prepared in our small cafe, serving fine local fare, in the nearby village of Sydenham. The rest of the week the kitchen facilities at the café are used to produce value-added foods for sale through our e-commerce website. Customers place weekly orders on the site and receive free delivery to the Kingston area.
Interns would be involved in all stages of gardening and will acquire skills in: soil management, seeding, transplanting, cultivation, harvesting, and preparing for market. Depending upon interns’ special interests, she or he could also be assigned to marketing, possibly at the Kingston Farmers’ Market, or farmer/chef training in our commercial kitchen.
A three room cabin (two bedrooms one common room) in the woods near the house will provide intern accommodation. Meals will mostly be shared with the farm family. Transportation to C.R.A.F.T. events (and to Kingston as required) will be supplied, as well as a stipend – this may vary according to whether the intern stays full time at our farm or just during work days – and a bonus will be negotiated if staying until the end of the season.
