Desert Lake Gardens

Two positions available.

Desert Lake Gardens is a small market garden farm with a special interest in shiitake mushroom growing. It is largely forested around our farm; much is red oak which is perfect for shiitake farming. We currently have 1000 logs in production. As well we grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables with particular concentration on salad greens and herbs.

Our produce is sold mainly through our e-commerce website (www.dlgardens.com) and is also a main focus in our Mill Street Café – located in the village of Sydenham. Our little café serves fine local fare a couple of evenings/week. The rest of the week these kitchen facilities at the café are used to produce value-added foods for sale to our website clients. We deliver to Kingston and area homes on a weekly basis. We wholesale shiitake mushrooms to restaurants and stores.

Interns would be involved in all stages of our gardening and will acquire skills in: soil management, seeding, transplanting, cultivation, harvesting, washing, packaging and preparing for market. Depending upon the interns’ special interests, they could be assigned to marketing (ie at the Kingston Farmers’ Market) or farmer/chef training in our commercial kitchen.

We have a cabin in our side woods that will provide lovely accommodation, combined with our on site harvest room/kitchen equipped with stove, fridge and washing facilities.

Accommodation, food and transportation to CRAFT events (and to Kingston as required) will all be supplied, as well as a stipend – this may vary according to whether the intern stays full time at our farm or just during work days – and a bonus will be negotiated if they stay till the end of the season.
