Heirloom Seed Sanctuary & Main Street Market
Heirloom Seed Sanctuary & Main Street Market Internship 2012
Heirloom Seed Sanctuary together with Main Street Market offer unique urban farm internship(s) for the 2012 growing season. Two agricultural operations in close proximity downtown Kingston offer diverse, dynamic work and educational experience.
Main Street Market is a decentralized urban farm pedaling vegetables in Kingston Ontario. We use organic and permaculture methods to supply the city with the Freshest Food! from the heart of the city. Our produce gets to our eaters via weekly CSA baskets delivered by bicycle, local markets, stores, food box programs and online at mainstreetmarket.ca
The Heirloom Seed Sanctuary saves seed and educates the public about seed saving, based on the belief that seed is the beginning of any ecology and sustainable food issues. To grow and save seed for future generations is a ministry that speaks to a concern for the earth and all creation. Over 250 varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs are grown on about 1 acre of gardens. Ecological practices and BioDynamic principles are used. Seed grown at Heathfield is adapted to local climatic and soil conditions.
2011 Internships are our invitation for an urban agriculture intern to spend 5-10 months living and learning with us on the urban fields. At the Sanctuary the intern(s) will get to participate in Heirloom Seed Activities such as workshops, tours and demonstrations for gardening groups, Heirloom Tomato Day plus seasonal celebrations, and monthly meetings of the Seed Savers Group. At Main Street Market intern(s) will be involved in every aspect of our work, from soil amendment and seeding, through growing and weeding, to cooking with and eating the harvest. They will get to interact with our eaters and gain marketing experience at weekly CSA basket pickups, deliver baskets by bicycle, and join weekly potlucks.
