Patchwork Gardens
We are offering 2 internship positions.
The farm:
Patchwork Gardens grows nutritious certified organic produce for families and small businesses in the Kingston area. With a commitment to organic soil building practices and direct marketing, we grow 10 acres of vegetables, fruits, and herbs on a farm comprised of a woodlot, ponds, and a creek – the rest is in hay. The main share of our produce is sold at the Kingston farmers’ market (3 days/week) and we operate a 30-share CSA. Other outlets include selling to restaurants, small grocers, and other wholesale contracts.
There are two families who run Patchwork Gardens, along with 2 or 3 paid staff, making life on the farm quite a fun and social setting. On work days we eat lunch all together in our newly-built clubhouse and take turns preparing these delicious meals. The farm is located about 20 minutes by car due north of Kingston.
The internship:
Interns will work with us in every area of the farm and can expect to work and learn about seeding and soil mix, greenhouse management, cultivation techniques, transplanting, irrigating, planting timing, harvesting, direct marketing, CSA management, plant and soil biology, seed growing, crop rotation, cold cellar storage, and some vegetable canning and preserving. There will be an opportunity to work our market stall in downtown Kingston as well as to initiate a small farm-based project of interest with the support of the farmers.
In addition to learning in the field, we will hold informal learning sessions on a regular basis on particular aspects of organic vegetable farming. We all had valuable internship experiences prior to Patchwork Gardens and intend on offering a learning opportunity that will equip you with a solid knowledge and skill-base for a future in farming.
An intern would be expected to work 5 days a week (week days), typically from 8am to 5pm with an hour for lunch, along with a half day every two weeks helping out at the Kingston farmers’ market. Interns can take home vegetables from the garden – lunches, snacks and tea/coffee are included. We will offer a monthly stipend as well as a bonus for staying until the agreed-upon end date.
Interns will need to provide their own off-farm housing and transportation to and from the farm. Transportation to and from CRAFT days will be provided.
Please apply to Patchwork Gardens with a resume, cover letter and 2 references. We will contact you by March 17th to follow up on your application.
