Root Radical CSA
One position available.
Root Radical Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) provides 75 vegetable shares and 50 egg shares to Kingston area households. In the garden, most work is done by hand or with human powered tools. We use tractors for spreading compost, tilling the garden, moving our chicken house weekly and for other heavy lifting. We have two greenhouses we use drip irrigation systems in our gardens, we do some seed saving and we have about 80 pastured laying hens.
Root Radical CSA is located between Kingston and Gananoque on Howe Island. The CSA garden is about 1.5 acres on Doublejay Farm, an organic dairy farm. Doublejay Farm is about 300 acres, including hay fields, permanent pastures, gardens, riverfront and wooded areas. Emily Dowling is the main CSA farmer, receiving support from her partner and her parents. In 2010, we are looking for one intern to join our CSA team. The intern is expected to commit to 22 weeks from the first week of May to the end of September to work 5 days per week. Intern accommodations and meals are in the farm house with the farm family (both generations) and a stipend of $250 every other week will be paid.
This is a hands on internship. Mainly, the intern will participate in the daily tasks involved in the operation of our CSA. The intern will rarely work alone so s/he will have lots of opportunity to ask questions and learn while working. In addition, we use a “skills inventory” to ensure that the intern is receiving a well rounded experience that meets his/her learning objectives. The “skills inventory” will be reviewed in the intern’s first week and will be revisited monthly throughout the season. The intern will also have the opportunity to do an independent project and present the results to an appropriate audience in the fall.
For a more detailed description of the internship and for information on how to apply, please see the opportunities page of our website: http://www.rootradicalrows.com/opportunities.html
