Vegetables Unplugged
One, half-time internship available – Position now filled
Welcome to Vegetables Unplugged CSA
Vegetables Unplugged Community Shared Agriculture (CSA), located on Wolfe Island, is hosted by Windkeeper Community Farm. The CSA produces vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit that are high quality, transitional organic. Weekly shares are delivered into Kingston on Tuesdays and Thursdays or are picked up at the farm. Vegetables Unplugged has operated on an incubator farm model for the past three years but is currently moving into an economically sustainable, values-driven business model to support our goals, one of which is to become certified organic.
The Intern will work along side farm owner and CSA manager, Katherine Rothermel, and other farm team members, learning all aspects of running a CSA, including but not limited to values-driven business planning, marketing, and sales, farm and crop planning, seed selection, planting, and saving, on-farm research and breeding, plus crop harvesting, presentation, and storage; s/he will also attend six regional CRAFT workshop days over the season. Most farm work is done with hand tools although rototillers are used, and a 1939 Farmall A tractor has recently been purchased. The 25-acre farm has a greenhouse, small flock of chickens and a breeding pair of Red Bourbon turkeys.
The Intern position begins at the end of April and runs until the middle of October; work hours can be negotiated and are calculated at an hourly rate of $10.00 paid biweekly. The successful applicant will be required to make a commitment to the entire season. Accommodation at the farm is not available at this time. A 20-minute ferry ride takes you from downtown Kingston to the village of Marysville on the island. The farm is within easy cycling distance of the ferry dock. Car-pooling may also be available through other farm team members.
The team at Vegetables Unplugged is committed to the exploration of the intellectual, aesthetic, cultural, and spiritual, as well as the physical aspects of farming. To paraphrase Kierkegaard, we strive to understand life backwards in order to live life forwards. And, despite the hard work, we have tons of fun in the process!
If you are intellectually and culinarily curious, open-minded, steadfast, physically fit, and truly interested in growing, sharing, preparing, and eating beautiful, healthy food, contact Katherine Rothermel via telephone at 613-385-8569 or email at foxcreek@kos.net with subject line: VU Internship 2010.
