Our Garden
Our Garden is a small, home-based business located on beautiful Manitoulin Island. We specialize in a limited range of organically grown produce, bedding plants and flower baskets plus jellies, vinegars and herbal products sourced from our land or in the wild.
We are a husband and wife team in our 60s with many years of experience to pass along. We grow most of our own food and live a “back to the earth” lifestyle and are systematically reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Our gardens and eco-friendly home are set in a peaceful, serene and meditative environment. Although we are able to harvest quite a lot from our one acre property, we tend the land with great care. All of our efforts are directed at reducing our environmental footprint and impact on the land. And as members of a creative, environmentally and socially conscious community we offer a learning experience that ranges beyond our own operation.
As an intern you will work in the greenhouse starting plants from seed, planting, cultivating and harvesting. You will also pick wild berries and herbs from the surrounding area. We have a fully equipped kitchen where you will learn to clean and store vegetables or prepare them for market; and how to make jellies, herbal vinegars and other natural products.
You will also have the opportunity to work with us at Farmers’ Markets. Plus there are many small jobs and learning experiences that are part of an operation such as this. We work hard, long hours but enjoy the work we do. There will be time for recreation and you’ll enjoy the healthy lifestyle and tasty rewards of your labour. To broaden your experience you may also have the opportunity to work on other farms.
