Fertile Ground CSA
Positions filled for 2012
Fertile Ground is a 4 acre, certified organic vegetable farm located just 15 minutes west of Waterloo. We grow a wide variety of vegetables for our 75 share CSA, the Kitchener Farmers Market, local cafes, and a local Buying Club. We are committed to community-building and drawing people into the story of their food. We have an active volunteer base and are always looking for ways to create opportunities for community interaction and involvement. We are offering 2 internship opportunities for the 2012 season:
Senior Intern: To apply for this position, you must have at least 1 full season’s experience on another vegetable farm and a serious interest in continuing to explore a future in farming. The senior intern will be given more advanced responsibilities and educational opportunities. In particular, the senior intern will have the opportunity to take on some field and volunteer management responsibilities, with the option of negotiating an individual project if desired. Seasonal stipend of $3-6000, depending on experience.
Novice Intern: No prior experience required, but must have a keen interest in experiencing a full season immersed in the hard work of organic farming. We may consider short-season or part-time applicants, but full-time, full-season applicants are preferred. A full-time novice intern will receive a stipend of $300/mth.
Season Length, Housing & Transportation: Both internships will run from May 1-Nov 1 (with flexibility to be involved with planning earlier in the year if interested). Interns will be provided with housing in Kitchener-Waterloo and provided with rides to and from the farm every working day. (Also accessible by bike.).
Educational Opportunities: Fertile Ground was begun directly out of a CRAFT internship and is now entering its 5th season of operation. Interns are involved in the following areas:
- Greenhouse management & seedling production
- Seeding and transplanting
- Tractor use for field and bed preparation
- Weed management & pest control
- Irrigation
- Volunteer supervision, teaching & management
- Harvest & postharvest handling
- CSA and farmers’ market marketing & distribution
In addition to experiential learning at the farm and CRAFT days, we arrange for 1 other monthly tour or workshop day. We are committed to developing an educational focus and level of responsibility that matches with experience level & interests.
Because of our transportation needs, we prefer that our interns have a G or G2 license.
