Blue Haven Farm is located 9 km east of Fergus and 20 minutes north of Guelph. The 10 acres of vacant land was purchased in 1995, the front half was tile drained and the farm was developed. 5 acres is farmed with a variety of animals – Pure Breed Tamworth Pigs, Saanen and Boer goats, Pure Breed Jacob Sheep, Heritage & Standard Turkeys, French Guinea Fowl, Geese, Ducks, Pheasants, Laying chickens, Silkies, and Roasting Chickens. Interns would assist in the individual animal/bird care, paddock care (conditioning, seeding, research), marketing, advertisin. 1/2 acre is used for the two main crops (Jerusalem Artichokes and Garlic). Interns would assist in the soil preparation, planting, maintenance, harvesting and marketing of these crops. Interns would assist in the development of vegetable and herb gardens – soil testing, conditioning soil for type of crop, research of best suited plants, starting plants, planting, maintaining, harvesting and advertising, marketing. Tree planting will take place in the early spring and fall. Harvesting of currents and other limited fruit will be done with methods of canning, jam and spread making taught. Interns will have an opportunity to work as an assistant judge at the country fairs. Opportunities for building animal housing/shelters, fencing etc may be provided. Most work is manual with assistance from small garden tractor and wagon. One position available from May to October
